Hi Fred,

Actually, you know, hes not too far off base. I finished a kerry blue
terrier, a sealyham and an ugly dandie dinmont from the classes with group I
wins. The sealy and the Dandy never saw major competition in the breed and the
kerry finished from the bred by classes and needed 2 single points to finish
(after he won the 3 point major that day in the breed). Luckily, there was a 5
point major in Mini schnauzers that day and that completed the dogs
championship. usually when a dog is of group winning caliber, I dont sweat it,
but I know the dandy didnt deserve to win the breed--let alone a group.

But hes right. Being "Qualified" doesnt make you "good". Many people can
spout of a standard, but when it comes down to sorting out the dog flesh, very
few people can do it in the breeds I have shown (mostly All breeds and mostly
terriers and poodles).

Ironically, some of the newer crop of judges coming up in my breeds are doing
the very best they can, but sometimes their best aint good enough. I even had
one tell me one time, "Your scottie is too short back.." (standard says, "low
to the ground, short backed and powerful) and I just shook my head and walked
away. The other time, (almost got suspended for running my mouth).. I lost a
major in Kerry blues to one that was 23" and solid black 3 year old. ( granted
mine was fat headed and not really fancy, but he was under 19" at the shoulder
and BLUE!!!).

The judge later told me that the other dog was a sounder mover. I reminded
him regardless of how they moved.. the standard says they are suppose to be
BLUE (at 18 months and over) and 19"and under. He offered to give my reserve
ribbon in front of the AKC rep. I told him I would love for him to do that--
only if he brought the disqualifiable winners dog to show the AKC rep... now
granted, I was out of line for running my mouth, but clearly a case where a
person didnt really understand the breed. All be it, he was 'qualified" but not
"smart".

  just my two cents.

  Mike Lynch
