The first litter that I ever had, when they were about 8 weeks, all came
down with Demo mostly on their faces. There are 2 types of Demo. Localized is
usually small patches usually on the head and face and sometimes a little
on the feet. Generalized is large areas not limited to the face but can
materialize on any part of the body and can be large areas. The vet said
that the mites are always there and are kept in control by the body's natural
defense system... In times of extreme stress (like changing puppies from
the house to a kennel) sometimes puppies will develop a little (as they call
it) puppy mange. The vet said that there were 2 schools of thought to their
delima... One, do not treat it to see if it will go away on its
own......Two, Treat it to not further tax the puppy's immune system but you
will never
know if the immune system would have solved the problem on its own. So I
treated all of them (9) and they all cleared up and never had that problem
again (I followed them thru life).One female however, cleared up with the
rest and then came back as generalized Demo. She was dipped often but it kept
coming back. At about 2 years of age she succumed to a bacterial infection
due to an immune system that was too weak.. Never had another puppy that
did that again.... Hopes this helps.. Patty J.

Everything I have ever read and including several vets have suggested that
Demo mites (any mites for that matter) become a problem for the animal
because the immune system cannot fight back - when normally it keeps the
mites under control.
Compromised immune systems happen for a variety of reasons - underlying
health problem, stress and........ TADA.... GENETICS!!! Yup, some dogs (and
people) are not born with healthy immune systems - hence health problems in
many cases and mites do apply...
