I'm just a pet owner. Over the years, some of the Hooligans have had HD, three
bloated w/torsion (all survived), one survived mesenteric torsion, one had
Lupus, one had juvenile arthritis, one lived 12-1/2 years with sub-aortic
stenosis when all the specialists said she would not live to see her 2nd
birthday, etc. I've lost one to DM, one to polymyositis, lost two to Cauda
Equina, four had hemangiosarcoma, others had multi-health problems, etc. All
except for one were seniors when they died.
And it's that one, Niki, who has left me mega-paranoid about osteosarcoma. He
never lived to celebrate his 8th birthday. It was the worst experience I've
ever gone thru with a dog in my life. The cancer was diagnosed in February and
he died four days before Christmas. The cancer was merciless, the pain could
not be controlled by any medication I tried - common canine and human pain
meds, fentanyl patches which not only didn't control the pain, they left nasty
weeping/bleeding areas where they were applied, and methadone were all useless.
The only relief he had from the pain was amputation of his right front leg.
He adjusted well to being a tri-pod, learned to do everythng any four legged
dog could do including digging holes in the yard.

And while I'll take any dog that the crap shoot of life gives me, the one
disease I try to avoid at all prices is the osteosarcoma. It's the one thing
I'll ask a breeder about and the only thing that if I find out a dog's relative
has died from, I won't take the pup or dog. I just wasn't built to emotionally
deal with this dreadful disease.

When looking for a puppy after losing a much loved family member, I think
people always ask about whatever "bad" they've been through. At least
that's been my experience. Sometimes it seems a little myopic because by
putting so much emphasis on a particular "bad", they don't think or know enough

to ask other things they should be asking. But that's OK too.
