I started in the early 70's in this in obedience as many now conformation
people did. Just chose to not do that now, but our own club puts on 4 obed
and 4 rally events yearly.
Because I don't do a "recognized" sport does not mean my dogs don't do any
work. One of my older males here helped me after both hurricane Ike and
Rita pulling tree's that were cut up out of the yard with a harness. It is
his job, one step down from me, to be pack leader and protect house and
property. He takes it serious. My young girl keeps track of me all the
time...finds my keys when I cannot, gets her leash when I walk her. Another
male thinks it is his job to keep parts of the yard clear of cats. So be it.
My dogs live with me and are allowed to do their own thinking.........that
is important. So because they don't have titles at the end of the name
doesn't mean they are stagnating. They all have full time jobs taking care
of me, helping me and thinking on their feet. If I asked more, I know
they could do more. Years of conformation showing is not making them less
than what they should be. After all, you cannot take the German Shepherd out
of the dog!

I just believe that the GSD can do it all. As I just wrote another list
member, my fear is that if generation after generation of dogs are never
subjected to work than they may lose the ability to work; which would be
tragic.
