If the crate is next to the bed where the humans sleep, then when the dog
starts to fuss, the crate can be hit with a shoe or something. This startles
the dog, and in that moment the dog is behaving as desired, and can be praised.
When the dog is praised, with Good Crate, Good Quiet, Good Night, it take very
little time for ANY dog to learn that sleeping is the only thing that will make
the people happy.
It takes the adverage GSD about 3 times of being corrected and praised for
them to get it. And they usually do not ever fuss again in the crate, without
a real crisis.
A dog over 6 months can hold themselves for 8 hours of sleep.
Having the dog sleep in the room where the people sleeps allows the dog to
bond, and be on the ground while the humans are on the pedistale of dominace.
If the dog is kept crated while the humans are away, next to the bed, and the
usual stuff of bedrooms, the dog bonds with the humans whether they are there
or not. And bedrooms are usually quiet so the dog is not distracted by things
and rests. Yes this does mean the dog is ready to go when the time comes, but
that is the price for wanting such dogs as ours. A 1/2 hour of attention in
the form of a walk can make the rest of the evening wonderful.
This is what I preach to my clients and I have seen the difference using this
over any other placing of the crate or no crate at all. The dogs learn to
sleep, on the floor, in the room, without making lots of noise, unless the dog
snores, all night long. Using this training method, my dogs all sleep within
10 feet of me all the time.
