Many came to escape being imprisoned....for being destitute.
They came as "indentured servants" either for private citizens (rich) or
into colonial service. Solved many problems....provided a cheap work force
for the colony, took vagrants off British hands and kept them out of prison.
I'm sure some unsavory individuals got here that way but America was never
intended to be penal colony.
My bet would be that the British have a very different view of the
Revolutionary
War, also (G)!
