The more I hear about what has gone during these elections, the funnier it
gets, although I have been accused of having a very warped sense humor.
It's become something of a black comedy. So, I thought I would pass along
some words of wisdom, just in case someone wants to slander someone or make
awful comments about anything.

1. Before you accuse someone of slander, make sure you know what slander
is. This is especially important if you plan on suing someone, accusing
them of slander in writing, or bringing up charges with the AKC or GSDCA.
Otherwise, if you are wrong, it is not the party you are accusing of
slander in the hot seat, it is you. That means it is the accuser who
becomes the person who committed slander. BTW, whenever anyone says
something that is the truth, regardless of how distasteful, it is not
slander. The ultimate defense is the truth.

2. If you choose to make slanderous, distasteful, crude comments to
someone's face, do not leave it on their answering machine, where the
comments will be saved in perpetuity to be replayed at parties, or written
down and sent to lots of people who will also enjoy laughing at what an ass
you made of yourself. And, since it is the truth and you recorded your own
comments all by yourself, you have no one to blame but yourself if you
continue be made fun of for the rest of your life.

3. If you have friends that want you to make comments they don't want to
make, ask yourself if they are handicapped and can't speak or write for
themselves. Otherwise, you may want to consider that you are being used.
Just so you know, you can't use the defense that you were ignorant of the
law, stupid, or easily led around by your nose. This advice also holds true
for writing a letter, memo or sending an e-mail.

I once had a very dear friend who, by definition, was a really bad person.
Actually, he was a professional bad person. He was more than a brother and
more than a friend and when he passed away 20 years ago, I lost someone who
was really quite wise. He cautioned me about playing by the rules. He said
there were bad guy rules and good guy rules, and it is up to each of us to
decide what set of rules we want to live our lives by. Both sides have
their advantages and disadvantages and as long as you play by one set of
rules, you'll be OK.

However, he also cautioned about mixing them up, and he said if you are
stupid, just play by the good guy rules and chances are you won't get
killed. Unfortunately, I think he meant that literally.

Fortunately, for most of us, we choose to live our lives by the good guy
rules and are afforded protection by the laws that govern us.
Unfortunately, even if you choose to be a bad guy, unless you are doing
something that is just plain illegal, most of the time you will not be
called to task. It turns out to be very costly and time consuming to sue
someone and, in the end, you have to prove damages to get a dime. Most of
the time no one gets court costs, so, even if you win, everyone ends up a
literal loser.

It pays to keep in mind that there are cases when people just get so
annoyed that they are willing to wait and spend money with virtually no
chance of making a dime or even recovering their expenses, just to make a
point. So these are my final rules.

1. Don't do something to someone who has much deeper pockets than you. They
may decide it is more fun to torture you than join a country club or buy a
boat.

2. Do do anything to a lawyer. They tend to like to argue and since they
only have to pay filing fees, they can outlast you. And, although I am sure
someone will argue with me, they also tend to have warped senses of humor.
