Carrie there is a great group on the internet, meds, diets and advise, it can
save an owner a lot of heartache and expense. Drug of choice is an antibiotic
along wuh eith prednisone or cyclosporin, diet should be switched immediately (
alternate protein sourse and no corn or wheat. It can be expensive, and with
the rescue situation right now, I honestly doubt that is a option, but hope
that I am wrong. Send them my e-mail if I can be of any help .

I have a friend/customer who drove from Colorado to Texas yesterday to
pick up a four year old German Shepherd from her nephew. She only knew
that the dog was very sick and that the nephew could not afford to take
him to the vet. When they arrived home today, they took him directly to
their vet. The dog has perianal fistulas. They brought him to my store
after the vet had shaved and cleaned him up. He is a very sweet boy.
There are fistulas all the way around the anus. The estimate from the
vet for treatment was up to $100 per week (especially in the
beginning). This family already has 5 dogs, and was not ready for this.
They were expecting allergies and/or a gut infection.
How are the current drugs (oral & topical) working on fistulas? Would
a German Shepherd rescue take the dog in this condition? The family
can't decide how to proceed. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
