So why does the mutation not show up more often? It sounds like that "Frankie"
the original "Panda" had a litter of 4 with 3 being (piebalds) "Panda's and
with other breedings they are getting them consistently.
When I first read about them, I would have sworn there was a Harlequin Great
Dane involved, but the university dispels that. If I would have seen them on a
ranch, probably would have thought them to be mixed with Cattle dog or who
knows what else. I had never heard of that coloring existing. It really is
true, one never ceases to learn things if they are willing to learn.

It is not a 'mutation'. Piebald Shepherds have been around for years.
Seen them off and on on old ranches, etc.
The term "Panda" is new..........but seeing the miss markings called a
'piebald' is not new.
Many colors and coats were used in the beginning ot this Breed before our
current Standard
I've had a few conversations with the breeder......she really doesn't want to
hear that.

Just wanted to make a correction. There was only ONE puppy "Panda" born in
the litter of normal German Shepherds. The puppy's name was Frankie and she
had blue eyes, along with the color mutation.  It was called a double
mutation and she was proven to be a purebred GSD. DNA testing was done on
Frankie, her sire and dam - they were German lines. She's reproduced puppies
like her with the coat color, but has never reproduced herself with the double
mutation (blue eyes and coat color).  I used to show in UKC with her breeder
Cindy McCann several years before that.  Cindy sent me pictures of the litter
and pictures after Frankie grew up and some of her puppies. Â
