Football Makes it Seven Straight with 31-17 win over Widener

10/24/2009 7:04:48 PM

READING, Pa. - With an all around solid defensive showing, the Lions (7-0/4-0 MAC) improved their undefeated streak to seven games as they defeated Widener University (3-4/1-3) by the final score of 31-17 Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.

Combined the nationally ranked Lions’ defense posted 56 tackles, seven sacks for -38 yards, 11 tackles for a loss for -46 yards, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, four interceptions, one blocked punt, and broke up five of Widener’s pass attempts.

Pacing the defensive line were seniors Brendan Bresnahan with 6.5 stops, one of which was for a loss and Bob Harper who had six stops, two sacks, and three tackles for a loss. Sophomore Alvin Thomas also had himself quite the afternoon totaling 2.5 sacks in the win. With those 2.5 stops, Thomas is now tied for the single season sacks record of 11.5 which was set in 1995 by Chris Rickards.

Coming up with a pair of interceptions against the Pride was sophomore Mark Bergery. Returning one of the team’s four INT’s for a touchdown was Josh Hare, which pretty much sealed the victory for the Lions late in the fourth quarter.

On the offensive side of the ball, senior quarterback Tanner Kelly recorded 217 passing yards, and rushed for an additional 39 yards. He was 18-for-30 with no interceptions for the seventh consecutive game. His longest throw of the day was a 44 yarder to Nate Romig. The senior threw for one Albright touchdown and rushed for another to give the red and white some added distance on the scoreboard.

Also producing for the O-Line Saturday afternoon was Romig who recorded seven catches for 97 total yards and Josan Holmes who rushed for 29 yards and a touchdown. He also finished second on the team with 64 receiving yards on five catches.

For the visitor’s the freshman quarterback duo of Chris Haupt and Kenny Anderson combined for 129 passing yards and were 11-for-29 respectively. Haupt recorded Widener’s last touchdown of the day when he connected with Justin Horning for Widener’s second score.

Picking up the Pride’s only other touchdown in Saturday’s MAC match-up was Federico Jellinek who returned a punt 36 yards to give Widener a 9-8 lead at the time.

Between the two squads Albright’s offense possessed the ball for a total of 35 minutes, while Widener was limited to just 25 minutes. Albright was also 13 of 18 on third down conversions and was 4-4 in the red zone.

Even with the solid production by the Lions, Saturday’s contest got off to a very rocky start. After dropping the opening kickoff out of bounds at their own two yard line, Widener picked up a safety to take a 2-0 lead in the first 10 seconds of the contest.

From there, Albright’s troubles continued as Widener on only their fifth official offensive play of the game ran the ball 34 yards for a touchdown. However, the touchdown was called back on offsetting penalties.

Albright’s defense would then take a full advantage of the penalties as junior Rob Mancinelli came up with a huge stop on fourth down to give Albright the ball on their own 34 yard line. Albright would then trade series with the Pride before getting the ball back with less than 10 minutes to play.

Giving his team great field position was Brett Gaul who blocked Widener’s punt on the Albright 48 yard line to end the Widener drive. The ball was recovered on Widener’s 37 yard line and gave the Lions the spark they were looking for on offense.

Kelly led the Lions the entire way, and on the one yard line handed the ball off to Holmes who rushed in for the score. They then made it a six point game on a successful two point conversion.

Down six, Widener did not waste too much time getting right back in front on the scoreboard. With the Jellinek’s punt return for the touchdown, the Pride found them selves in the driver’s seat yet again with a 9-8 lead.

Moving into the second quarter, Albright retook control of the scoreboard on a Tyrell Drumgo two yard touchdown reception to make it 14-9. Following that score, the Lions never looked back as they went on to record a field goal in the third quarter by junior John Whelan and a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Widener did have the final say, unfortunately for them it was too little too late on the Haupt 11 yard touchdown pass to Horning.

Proving to play a major factor in Saturday’s contest was the torrential down pour that began at halftime and the combined 13 penalties for 101 yards respectively.

However Albright will look to continue their winning ways next Saturday when they host FDU-Florham in a 1 p.m. MAC showdown at Shirk Stadium.
