...honest, this is a real AP news release. I wanna job on that sneaker tanker. BE Safe - Tom Thousands of shoes lost off North Coast heading for Alaska The Associated Press -- Thousands of Nike basketball shoes are heading for Alaska after they spilled from a tanker off California's rugged North Coast. Three 40-foot containers fell from a cargo ship in December during a storm off Cape Mendocino. Some 33,000 sneakers went overboard. A beachcomber found two new Nikes near Queets on Washington's Olympic Peninsula last month. Unfortunately, Nike doesn't tie its shoes together -- so the finder has two left shoes, one size ten and a half, the other an eight and a half. Curtis Ebbesmeyer is a Washington oceanographer who tracks flotsam patterns. He studies currents by charting the paths taken by lost cargo. He says the sneakers are on the way to Alaska -- and his calculations indicate they're traveling at up to eighteen miles a day.
