2 PhD studentships with th= e SURFACE Inclusive Design Research Centre I'DGO
(Inclusive Design for Gett= ing Outdoors) Consortium. 

Applications are invited for 2 full-time = PhD studentships in the SURFACE
Inclusive Design Research Centre at the Uni= versity of Salford. Each
studentship is attached to research being carried = out by the EPSRC-funded
I'DGO Consortium (see www.idgo.ac.uk). 

The Consortium, including WISE (Wellbeing in Sust= ainable Environments)
research unit at Oxford Brookes University, and OPENs= pace - the research
centre for inclusive access to outdoor environments, at= Edinburgh College
ofArt / Heriot-Watt University, has won funding for a s= econd phase of
research beginning January 2007. 

I'DGO has a continu= ing aim to identify effective ways of ensuring the
outdoor environment is d= esigned inclusively, to improve the quality of
lifeof older people. As an = I'DGO PhD student, you will contribute to the
aspects of the I'DGO research= being carried out by SURFACE - i.e.
investigating the implications of the = design, siting and laying of tactile
(blister and corduroy) paving for olde= r people. 

The research will involve: literature reviews, focus grou= ps with older
people, on-site observation of older people using tactile pav= ing,
interviews with older people whilst using tactile paving in local envi=
ronments, and measurement of tactile paving at 54 case study sites. 
You will be expected to contribute to the collection of the fieldwork data=
,analysis of the data, presentation of findings at seminars and conference=
sand writing of reports and research papers. The studentship requires dail=
yattendance at the University and a 35 hour working week on the main proje=
ct. 

As well as contributing to the main research, you will identify= an aspect
ofresearch for individual study for the purposes of gaining a P= hD degree.
The data for the PhD research will be collected alongside the da= ta for the
main project. The selected topic for the PhD may be directly rel= ated to
themain project, or more broadly to the discipline of inclusive de= sign.
Initial ideas on the proposed topic area for a PhD should be submitte= d
withthe studentship application. 

Applicants should have a good u= ndergraduate degree or master's degree. A
built environment background (for= example planning, landscape, geography,
architecture or urban studies) is = welcomed but not mandatory. An interest
in inclusive design and an aptitude= for research are essential. 

The studentship is suitable for UK and= EU students and provides full
tuitionfees and living costs at the standar= d EPSRC rate (living costs of*
=C2=A312,300*a year, tax-free). An internati= onal studentship may be
supported depending on the quality of the applicant= .

The studentship provides funding for a p= eriod of three years, commencing
