French: Postdoctora= l Fellow in Thermal Engineering at Ecole des Mines de
Nantes
Postdoctora= l Fellow: Research and Development in fluid mechanics and
thermal sciences:= application to fire safety.

Reference: DSEE-2006-MP-1

N= umerical simulation of air-curtain-based separation systems with appli=
cation to fire safety in semi-confined areas.

The work proposed here= comes within a broader research programme devoted to
fire safety on board = ships.

More specifically, it is aimed at in= vestigating the potential benefits
fromusing air-curtain-based system= s as auxiliary fire safety systems to
hamper smoke and heat propagation in = case of fire in confined areas,
facilitate people evacuation in a self-resc= ue phase and make easier rescue
team access to the incident place. Appropri= ate designs can also reduce
oxygen supply locally, and contribute to fire s= elf-extinguishment.

Various air curtain arrangements will be in= vestigated numerically with the
LES code FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). Sim= ple corridor-like geometries
will be considered first for qualification and= validation purposes.
Numerical results (flow and scalar fields) will be co= mpared with the
results from earlier PIV and tracer gas laboratory experime= nts that have
been conducted at the Ecole des Mines de Nantes (including th= e air curtain
impingement region in which we experimentally detected and ed= uced coherent
structures whose populations have been subsequently character= ized
statistically). They will be compared also with numerical results= obtained
from simulations with statistical CFD codes.

Then, numeric= al tests will be performed to investigate the conditions that
can arise loc= ally during a fire on simple models of elements (cabin,
corridor, for examp= le) when an air-curtain-based fire safety system is
operated, assess a= nd quantify the efficiency of the tested ventilation
arrangements, and sugg= est appropriate designs.

Benefits

Financial support is available for another = 12-month experimental research
work on the same topic.

Additional In= formation
This post-doc project must be viewed as an exchange process wh= ereby the
candidate will bring his skills to contribute to the development = of the
proficiency of our laboratory (introduction of FDS) while acquiring = or
improving knowledge in the field covered by the present project.

= Requirements
PhD in Engineering or Physics (A PhD is considered as a per= iod of Research
experience equal to at least 3 years). The candidate must h= ave a solid
background in turbulent fluid dynamics and heat transfers. The = candidate
should have a good sense of physics. Ideally, he should be famili= ar with
plane air jets. Candidates with experience in running / developing = the FDS
code are especially welcome.

Good ability for written and or= al communication in English is necessary
(publications, conferences). = Knowledge of French is not required.

Application
The candidate wi= ll be asked to commit himself for the 12 months of the
project.

Fina= ncial support is available for another 12-month experimental research
work = on the same topic. The applications of candidates who are ready to
embark o= n a 2-year post-doctoral project and take in charge both the
numerical and = experimental aspects of the problem will receive special
attention.
