Responding to Don Williams's comment about a Braun two-piece strobe, I also had
one purchased a few years earlier. It was a powerful one. But mine used a 6
volt lead-acid battery with the power supply utilizing a vibrator circuit to
kick up the voltage to the required HV for the strobe lamp to fire. After some
years the battery became hard to get and expensive so I got rid of it.

Not sure if it's related but I was in Panama in 1963, summer, and boughta Braun
strobe. It was a two piece unit and used a single highvoltage battery, forgot
the voltage.
At the time I had an Argus C4, a HS graduation present. It had Mand F sync
settings and I kept getting under exposure, regardless of theF-stop. I finally
shot the back of the inside and saw that I had abehind-the-lens shutter and
could see, from the flash image, that theflash fired when the shutter was part
way open and was thus the effectiveF-stop.
Back at Oklahoma University I had access to the Physics machineshop. I ground
a third cam on the shutter bar and added a new setof contacts which I wired to
the "F" switch, which was then an"X" sync. I then found that I had to build a
shieldaround the contacts because the spark was exposing the film.
(Verytedious work, 00 size screws and taps)
Later, the shutter toggle broke and Argus repaired the camera, andtwisted my
careful work out of the way. I had to repair my contactsystem. It turns out
that the breaking toggle bar was a typicalproblem. I kept the camera, even
after getting the 2.8C in HongKong in 1954. I gave the Argus camera to a
collector last year, Ithink maybe someone on this list.
Any of this relevant?
