Thanks, everybody, for your thoughts on the Rolleimarin
and using a Rolleiflex under the surface.

John, I got your note and plans. I may give this a try. But
I was also intrigued by Eric's suggestion of using a fish
tank -- I might go across the street to Petco and see what
they have available.

Still, I would like to have the pleasure of using a Rolleimarin
at least once before I head off to the Great Darkroom, so,
Don, yes, I would appreciate contact information for the fellow
in California who might rent one to me.

Thanks, everybody, for all your help.

Sanders

Hi Sanders,

I would not want to take a Rollei under water without a proper housing, even to a few feet. A cheaper way, if you do not have a Rolleimarin, but
it is not using a Rolleiflex is to buy something like this ebay item
from Canon (I have one and it is great but it is not Rollei):

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/canon-35mm-sureshot-underwater-snorkling-scuba-cam
era_W0QQitemZ280320817085QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Photography_Film_Cameras_
ET? hash=item280320817085&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3
A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318#ht_500wt_1182

I do have an incomplete Rolleimarin Mk1 and complete Aquamarin SL6006
and Aquamarin SL66 housings. Not the sort of items you want to post!

You could make up a 'lightweight' rigid housing from 3/5mm Perspex or
acrylic sheet, fixed together with silicon sealant. You would have to
find a way of winding on and releasing the shutter. Focus and exposure
could be set before you 'descend' to the depths, providing you have a
subject in mind. By 'glueing' a couple of extra thickness 'pads' where
you want to pass a shaft through the housing, you can add a couple of
o-rings between the pads to effect a seal.

I have a copy of an underwater technical pamphlet from the 'Kodak Data
Manual' dated circa 1965, which describes DIY housings. I will scan it
and email you a copy. I had the idea of building a housing for my
Rolleicord Vb years ago....... never got around to it though. ;-)

It occurs to me that I may have asked the wrong question.

I want to shoot a few rolls with a Rolleiflex underwater in
a swimming pool. I'm taking her down to 18 inches.

Is there a way to do this safely (for the camera) (I will
survive) for a short shoot like this? I briefly considered
a large Baggie but thought that might be dodgy.

And can anyone share Don Williams's contact information

I am in New York, but would cover shipping for one that is

Carlos,
I am also not rushing into this upgrade either. It needs to be
professionally done, not some botched job. Wonder if Rollei (F&H)
has anything to say about converting the P11? Maybe I should also
try a new 300 W bulb or, if necessary, the (hot!) 500W bulb with the
heat filter to see if I get any better brightness. My last set of
Leica slides was a tad underexposed, which was clearly too dark for
the current bulb. You can see some scans of the slides here:
http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/bigon07/Montreal/
(all shot with ZM Zeiss 2.8/35 C-Biogon, BTW)

I normally use Hama DSR (35mm) or Hama Proslide AV (7x7) glassless
plastic mounts and never have problems with the thicker Proslide AV
mounts. Not sure who still carries the Hama Proslides in this
country (special order at B&H). I couldn't even find them on my last
visit to Münster, Germany, in December. Cardboard mounts are trouble
in the P11 but then it is so convenient to get the slides back from
the lab (nowadays Fujilab in Parsons, KS) and not having to mount
them first. For an important show I would remount them.

I remember, some 15 yeara ago, a Dutch forester friend of mine gave a
guest lecture in a large lecture hall at the Univ. of Minnesota and
the Kodak projector striked when we tried everything out. I rushed
home to get my P11 with the 250mm lens, the little lens support
bridge and the 500W bulb. That's where this old projector really
shines (pun intended).

"extremely important" (Technical Report) latches for the magazines
transport requiring to be adjusted via a lever at the exact

understand the issue very well, but it has to do with the exact
magazine advance to insert the 6x6 or 4x4 (mounted 35mm slides); I
think some P-11 users complaints about jammed slide/ sliders have
to do with these precise adjustments.
I use the P-11 for 6x6 (7x7 plastic mounted)slides only and I'm not
sure if I want to upgrade it for halogen lamps yet, however I think
I'll do it with the friend of mine electronic engineer help; BTW I

Jan,
In general I use plastic Gepe glassless mounts for 35mm and 6x6, they are good mounts. I prefer to mount the slides, the lab sends me the entire developed rolls and I scan them, afterwards I choose the slides to mount. I have a Rollei P 35 to project 35mm slides, it works fine and then I keep the P-11 lamp (300 W)for MF slides, I don't have the 500W lamp, however I have a new Philips 6280C/05 G17Q 220V/300W lamp as replacement for the lamp in use, they are difficult to find here, socket G-17q specially and then it's possible I'll need the conversion in the future; my P-11 has the Vario Heidosmat Isco 3.5 110/160mm zoom.

Very nice slides Jan, I liked the Montreal downtown slide very much, perhaps some of them - not the downtown- are underexposed slightly, but they represents the season very well. I did not take slides recently, however and to recall the Rolleikin, I took these two slides using the 2.8C Xenotar and the Rolleikin in 2007, 35mm Fuji Sensia too:

POOXT and consists of a PROON reflex housing and
a POOIM magnifier. Now, that gets the formalities out of the way!

The unit I have available is s/n 4303. I
compared it to my other two PLOOT housings, s/n
2695 and 5660. 4303 is in what I would describe
as E- condition. Here are the noted defects:

-- the rubber eyecup is dried and has a crack
-- the paint is worn
-- the mirror is degraded and needs
resurfaced. This is a first-surface mirror. The glass is in good shape.
-- the button to raise the mirror is jammed. I
have NOT tried to force it up nor have I used oil
on it. The housing for the mutton seems to be canted inwards.
-- the rubber ring at the top of the focusing
unit is cracked and is missing a bit of rubber.

The unit is complete and entire, though it does
not include the release cable, and, other than
the mirror, optically fine. It does need good cleaning

My book, NON-LEITZ LTM LENSES: A 39mm DIVERSITY,
is now out of print. I have the last small horde
of this work. . The book remains available for
reprint but this seems unlikely. This work was
written in the early 1990's and is no longer the
final word, as we have had a lot of research,
especially on Soviet/Post-Soviet lenses. But it
is still the only work of its kind and is the
single source for the state of our knowledge as
of the date of its publication. (SOMEDAY, I'll
do a Second Edition, but only if some of you guys
stop discovering new matters I ought to include!)

These books are new stock. They will be
autographed and will include an interim Errata et Corrigenda sheet.

The price is $US35 for those in the US and Canada
and $US 40 to those in the rest of the universe,
and, yes, I've already sold several copies to
those three-legged guys on Mars. <he grins>

I also have a couple of copies of the Japanese

I am the American agent for Erwin Puts' estimable

production run is long sold out, but I can supply
burned copies in a jewel case for $US 15, with

at actual cost elsewhere in the Americas.

This CD-ROM includes 170 Leitz documents,
covering the Leica models from 1925 to 1965, both threadmount and for the

Subject: [rollei_list] NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS: PLEASE READ!

List Folks:

Several things of merit need attention by us all from time to time:

a) This is a Rollei List, not a general photography list. I don't
mind an occasional wandering off-topic, but I would ask that we keep
such diversions to a bare minimum. If it doesn't involve the care
and feeding of Rollei cameras, I would suggest that the topic be
taken up elsewhere. And, PLEASE! Every off-topic comment should be
so marked in the SUBJECT block by adding, at the
beginning: OFF-TOPIC so the unwary can be alerted and read or delete
as they wish.

b) PLEASE change the subject block when a thread grows away from its
original subject matter. That is, a thread might begin, honestly
enough, marked with a subject heading of OLD STANDARD ROLLEIFLEX
LENSES but the topic might shift, over days, to coverage of modern
Xenotar lens design. When this happens, please have the courtesy to
your fellow list members to change the subject block to: MODERN
XENOTAR LENS DESIGN or somesuch.

c) When those taking the digest respond, PLEASE reset the subject block!

d) Please be careful to trim the quoted text in the message to which
you are replying. That is, please block-and-cut or whatever your
software requires to reduce the quoted text to the bare minimum
necessary to maintain continuity. Most of you are already doing this
quite nicely, but it would be best if we all were quite conscientious
in doing so!

e) Should you be out of the loop for a few days, pray, do NOT use an
auto-response message of any sort, or I will simply unsubscribe
you! Such messages will be replayed, ad nauseam, to the entire
list. Please unsubscribe if you must for the period you will be gone.

f) Please send your messages in plain-text only. HTML and similar
codings are NOT looked on with favor by the undersigned!

g) Thankfully, we are a polite and communal lot, so I will only say
that we have never experienced the sort of flaming agonies which
occasionally afflict other lists. I would like to see this collegial
spirit of good-will and honest debate continue. To that end, please
remember that postings to the Rollei List are in the nature of
conversations between good friends, and these ought not be repeated
outside the List without the explicit permission of the original

There are 4 versions of the Rolleimarin and I have a version 4, that
uses only a Rollei 3.5F. It's for sale, along with the camera,
accessories, and spare parts, but not for rent.

I have two recommendations:

1. Build yourself a box with an open top and a window in the
side at the bottom so that you can hold it from the surface and
easily get your taking lens down 18".

2. Buy or rent one from a repair company I know of in Northern
California. There is a specialist there who owns 4-5 Rolleimarins
and he would probably be pleased to rent one to you. I don't have
his email address at hand but it's in this computer somewhere. If
you want to contact him let me know and I will dig out his name,
email address, and the website for the company he works for.

Good luck, and don't drop your camera in the water.

Yes indeed, a baggie is not a good idea.

I know folks who put their cameras in fish tanks to accomplish what
you are looking to do...

If they are molded glass tanks they will hold up since they are small.

Built-up tanks are designed to withstand internal pressure so if
anyone decides to go that route, check the tank first.
