I found the specs for the lamp: 6V @ 60 mA. A miniature screw
base indicator lamp. There is a European number listed in the
little booklet "The Practical Accessories". I will find a similar
lamp at Grainger or somewhere similar. This is like a small radio
dial lamp. It works by passing a small current through the bulb
to see if the filament is intact. Current has to be low enough so
it won't fire the lamp. It is held by a spring clip and is
visible trough a small window on the top of the flash unit. There
is a test button next to it. The flash gun will probably work
without it.
I don't remember which list the question about the capacitor
came up in. There is confusion between BC flash for flash bulbs
and strobe flash. Strobe uses capacitors too but of a much
different type.
I have not searched for the 22.5 V battery yet. I know they
are available but may be expensive. At the time the Rolleiflash
was made these batteries were commonly used in hearing aids so
were readily available.
I have a fair collection of unused flash bulbs, who knows if
they are still good. I used to buy them at camera sales or swap
meets whenever I saw them. I also have flashguns for a couple of
Speed Graphics. They are straight battery type without a
capacitor. I have thought of putting a coin type battery into
them along with the D cells to get a boost when used with a
solenoid synchronizer. A rather low priority project.
Sometime I should write a history of flash in photography.
Have to do some research especially on dates. I am not sure where
flash bulbs originated, some sources say Wabash Electric, a maker
of light bulbs and some claim General Electric. Wabash became
absorbed by Sylvania Electric (Blue Dots Mean Sure Shots). Bulbs
came into use around the early 1930s. Before that it was flash
powder (nasty stuff) and flash paper.

Test Lamp? Never heard of one.
I agree on the capacitor.
Memories fade with time . . . I still have a Rolleiflash but can't find the
under-water flash I built for my Rolleimarin and can't remember how I built the
electronics components.

In one of the Rollei lists there was a recent discussion of BC flashguns.
At least I think it was a Rollei list.
Anyway, I found my Rolleiflash. The capacitor is an electrolytic 20uF at
30 Volts. I tested mine on an old General Electric capacitor check and it seems
to be OK. I will test again just to make sure but the value is on the high
side, to be expected and there does not seem to be a large amount of leakage.
I need to find out what sort of lamp was used as the test lamp.
I will copy this to the other Rollei list.
