It was a cold and dreary day here in our Nation's Capital. Nevertheless, this afternoon I loaded up a 4 x 5 film holder with the new Rollei R3 film and shot a couple of frames in the backyard with my "homebrew" view camera. I then developed them in Rollei's "slow film" soup. I rated the film at ISO 200 and exposed it for 1/2 second at f22 through a Schneider 210mm f5.6 Symmar lens.

The result is at:

Please ignore the composition and subject -- they're totally uninspired. As I said, this was the backyard on a rainy day.

The processing time with Rollei's developer is unusually long -- 25 minutes -- and yields what looks like a very thin, marginally useable negative. However, once scanned (in this case) the resulting image is just fine. I'm impressed by its tonal range and almost undetectable grain (neither of which can be appreciated in this web image). It's fine film.

I'll wait for the sun and a good subject and shoot some more interesting frames with the eight sheets I have left. I'll also shoot a roll of R3 with my SL66 and keep you posted on the results. So far, though, I'm pleased. I wanted to like this Rollei marketed film -- and I do.
