That is a fine question. In the end, it is an
immoral Ponzi scheme which simply robs the
working stiff of money and pays him almost
nothing in return. An argument could be made,
though, that it is contractual or an argument
could be made that it is an entitlement or an
argument could be made that it is simply
government theft. Have it any way you want: the
program ought to be abolished today. My wife and
I are both 60 and we would cheerfully waive all
claims to our own Social Security accounts if
only they would just end the program.
