This camera may have been used just for a one-off studio shot of the actors,  
The reference to the Varex is due to the actual camera used in the movie.  
check the various stills in:Rear Window (1954)
You can clearly see the prism on top of the camera.  It certainly looks like an 
Exakta to me.
