This is slightly off track as regards the Rolleicord Triotar but my B35 has a 40mm f3.5 Triotar. I did some comparative tests with my 35S with 40mm f2.8 Sonnar. The Triotar is a really crisp lens and easily out-performed the Sonnar on big enlargements but I do not think that that Sonnar is a good example. I have a C35, 35, 35T, 35TE and 35SE and they all take very good pictures but I have not done any comparisons. I'm wondering about the Triotar lens. Do people who've used it like the effect for wide-aperture portraits and such where a hard, sharp look is not the desired result? Used wide open, is the "look" recognisably different from that of a Tessar or Xenar used wide open- is it sufficiently different to warrant using it instead sometimes? What about the other wider apertures before you get to f8? Any other info about the "Triotar look" would be much appreciated. FWIW I always avoided any three-element lens, thinking that a Tessar-type was always automatically a better choice. With a lot of vintage gear I still don't own a single three-element lens. If I do this it will be a big step for me.....
