If you were to design a lens, say 80mm versus one that is 180mm, would the shorter design typically be easier to design with better resolution? In other words, if the lens is a longer focal length, it is more difficult to produce higher resolution compared to shorter focal lengths. Anyone know?

Resolution is really not the issue, Peter. In VERY general terms, resolution can more readily be achieved in shorter focal-length lenses but it is not difficult to produce a high-resolution long focal length lens. There are too many other optical parameters demanding attention to concentrate on resolution.
