Yes, and as was nickel.  In fact, during the war, some 5 cent pieces
were made of silver, rather than nickel.

During the Hunt Ag. upswing, I recall people selling their Georgian
silver tea sets, Taxco silver coffee sets and sterling flatware to try
to get the big bucks!
