Was taught the opposite: man walks on the street side to protect the woman from mud (and other things) thrown up from the gutter from vehicles going by.
Judging from most women of my experience it also makes it easier for them to window shop.

About where the lady walks, I remember something from grade school where the man walked on the left so the lady would not get hit by garbage thrown from an upstairs landing. This relates to sidewalks in villages.

Anyone remember that?
