The disks are 7/8" and about 13"s in dia.
The chambers are pretty heavy duty for gas samples, those are usually stainless
steel spheres.
I'm going to take one apart and clean it up a little, then put it on a vacuum
pump next week.
I'll let you know how it goes.

chamber and try a couple different ways of sealing the ends before I scale up.
Sounds like a good idea, so I’m going the recycle yard tomorrow to see if I can
find some 2” or 3” square tube. I also have some 3/8” thick polycarb that will
probably be OK for the ends of a small chamber.
The chambers you found look like gas collection bottles, but might work nicely
for vacuum.
So, thank you for posting this. Did you get a measurement on the thickness of
the Plexiglas disks you found?

My Office is next to our Campus salvage exchange.
I found several pieces of thick Plexiglas in the scrap bin. They wanted $20
for what’s in the attached photograph.
As you can see, they also had 5 or 6 vacuum chambers, 17” Long and 4” in dia.
With brass end plates and connecting rods.
They are selling for the scrap brass price of about $15 to $20 each.
Thought you might be interested.

I tried a couple places in Anaheim like Industrial Plastics Supply. I’ve
purchased G10 in the past from them. Unfortunately, no one had any remnant
pieces currently. Stuff like this goes pretty fast. Also, stock material
comes in 1 sq ft sizes, so I would be wasting over 50% of the material.
This is my first vacuum chamber and I “picked” the size based on what was
available at the recycler. There was some 12” diameter PVC pipe but I’ve read
that PVC bleeds a lot for vacuum chamber use. There’s some other reasons I’m
staying away from plastic for most of the chamber wall, like the tendency to
start cracking when the chamber is cycled between atmospheric pressure and
vacuum.
So, at 5 ½” inside dimension and over 3’ long, I’ll be able to put up to 4”
diameter sections into the chamber for testing. If it works OK, I’ll start
looking for larger chamber material.

Orange County Industrial Plastics in Anaheim is where I get most of my plastic
material.
Norton Sales is mostly doing movie rentals these days from what I hear. I
haven't talked with Carlos for over a year.
Try to get some remnants from a company that installs bullet resistant glass at
banks. They should have some small pieces.

For a vacuum chamber, I don’t think I should try to laminate thinner pieces
together. High vacuum has a tendency to pull stuff apart.
The chamber will be approximately 42” long and 5.5” ID square. The clear
plastic is for the ends. For the thickness of the clear plastic I would like
the best optical quality possible. I’ll be viewing through the ends of the
chamber using a video camera. (I’m not going to be sticking my nose up
against the end of a 3 ½’ long chamber with high vac inside.) The other
walls of the chamber are ¼” thick aluminum.
I found 1 ¼” thick bullet resistant (sometimes referred to as just BR
plastic) at the local recycle yard, but I would have to purchase an old bank
