Sounds like a nice day out but, November is rather far in the future. You may
want to post this again in September/October.

interested ROC member that could help out the Simi Valley Historical Society.
Please reply directly to Nancy Kidd if you are serious about helping out.
Thank you.

Comment or Question: Dear Esteemed Rocketeers,
The Simi Valley Historical Society is hoping to celebrate the 60 years of
rocket engine testing at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory in the Simi Hills
with a special Rocket Day at the Strathearn Historical Park entitled “The
Fires of Creation.” Many of our Simi Valley citizens were employed in the
efforts of NASA and Rocketdyne to bring the American Space Program to life
here at SSFL.
When the Santa Susana Field Laboratory is turned to dust and ashes then we
will have locally erased the memory of our proudest achievement as Americans
in all of Science and Space. Human beings are not human without their
memories and dreams. We need to celebrate, not erase, this priceless
touchstone of the rocket engines born in flame and glory that carried us to
the moon and beyond.
The memory is already fading of that truly sacred moment created
spontaneously when the Space Shuttle Endeavour rolled silently down the
streets of Los Angeles and the people by the hundreds of thousands came out
and stood for hours over two days to watch and pay homage to The Great
Binding Dream. They had not even been invited and they came anyway. They knew
in their hearts that they stood in, and for, a special endeavor that included
all mankind. Many of them had worked and fashioned and dreamt and loved and
bled and, yes, they knew of those who had died, for the dreams that led to
the stars of Hubble, to the dusty plains of Mars, to the Moon and to the
mysteries of Creation.
All over our world for thousands of years our shamans and sages have watched
the stars and dreamt of being among them. And right here in the Simi Hills
our local First Nations People built a sacred landscape that included a
lookout platform for dreaming among those stars hundreds of years ago right
here at SSFL. In the ancient Chumash belief system it was to the stars of the
Milky Way that one traveled after death from Point Conception through the
Western Gate to eternal life and know one had a place among the stars. This
ancient sacred landscape is in uncanny juxtaposition with dreams of modern
spaceflight. Thousands of years of dreams meet here uniquely in all the world.
Yes, we strove valiantly for the triumph of high achievement. It is a tragedy
that those that spent themselves in a worthy cause are too soon forgotten. We
propose to remember them at the Strathearn Historical Park with a special
Rocket Day Saturday, November 18th, 2017. We cordially invite you to visit
with us and see how you might support our effort. We have a social media
presence at www.simihistory.com.
The Test Stands at SSFL are eligible for National Historic Status. The
wildlife, fauna and flora, at SSFL is unique and much of it is threatened.
The archaeological treasures at SSFL are part of a Traditional Sacred Site
and must be protected. How is it possible that the entire Area of Potential
Effect is to be scourged and all of these jewels disturbed and destroyed?
As a Rocketry Club do you have very small rockets you could deploy or display
at our event? Please help us remember “The Fires of Creation.”
