Hi Vanessa

My girls seems to be settling in very well thanks, although they’ve been quiet
the past week with this north wind (unfortunately the hive is a bit exposed to
this). Weather didn’t allow a proper inspection over the weekend, but I gave
them some more food yesterday – though I don’t know if this was necessary.

They’ve got brood and stores and are stretching across 9 frames at present.
I’ve had a super on for a few weeks but to date no sign of them drawing it out.
Plenty of OSR around at the moment so I’m hoping they will kick in with this
soon.

Since sending out the original mail I’ve seen the queen (luckily marked) and
while my eyesight hasn’t let me see any eggs yet there is certainly larvae. I
consulted Neil Pont, who I got the bees from, about the queen cells and he
suggested removing them, which I have done. Neil was very helpful and even
offered to replace the queen if there was any problem with her, but I don’t
think this will be necessary. I’m planning on getting a second lot from him
and Derek sometime this month.

The Notts newsletters are good aren’t they. I’m tending only to forward on
stuff that I don’t think a local association would necessarily pass on as I’m
assuming that we are all members of one somewhere or another.

Hope all goes well with your bees, keep us posted as to how they are getting on.

Ben – I’ve got in my diary that there is a Artificial Swarm session at
Riseholme this Saturday, do you know if this is still on?

Steve

Hello Steve,

I was just wondering how you are getting on now with your bees. Mine are due in
about a week and I've been thinking about you and whether everything is
starting to fall into place. Are you happy with the colony from the auction now?

Thanks for forwarding the emails, I find the Notts newsletters especially
interesting.

Thanks again,

Vanessa

Hi – pretty simple question. Having bought a colony at the Lincoln auction I
gave it its first inspection last weekend.

They all seem pretty healthy and happy, but had two slight concerns – 1) on one
of the frames there were three supercedure cells (didn’t check to see if they
were being used or not) and 2) I didn’t notice any uncapped larvae – this may
have been due to looking for the wrong thing or not wearing my glasses though.
Of course I’m worried as to whether its queen-right and will do a slightly less
panicky inspection as soon as the weather allows.

Question though - how do I tell the difference between capped brood and capped
stores? Is it colour or shape (see to recall that drones are in more domed
cells)?

Thanks

Steve
