I have a different take on this issue. . . I rarely expect the =
individuals at the counter in a post office to assist me in filling out =
envelopes, addressing packages or filling out forms, unless the form is =
given to me at that moment and therefore I haven't had the opportunity =
for a reader to assist me beforehand. Prior to going to the post office, =
I work with a reader beforehand and get the package addressed. Also, =
instead of paying that $20 for a cab to get there, I pay someone that =
same $20 and ride in a private car and get four or five errands done at =
the same time as my driver is doing his own errands in the same =
vicinity. I suppose the bottom line here is that a little =
resourcefulness will go a long way; sometimes this is possible, other =
times it isn't. . . Here's another thought: There was probably a line of =
people behind the blind man, everyone waiting h/her turn. Why not just =
turn to one of the people in line once rejected for assistance at the =
counter, and politely ask if someone could assist in addressing a =
package?=20

I think you really need to pick your battles wisely before you approach =
the media. Once you're in the media spotlight, you're a spokesperson for =
thousands of people who are classified with the same disability as you =
are.=20

Just my thoughts.

Kimberly

Jose:
First, I don't recall seeing any case law dealing with this issue as to
whether filling out address forms is or is not a reasonable =
accommodation.
That might be simply because as a matter of practice, clerks generally =
are
happy to do this kind of thing, certainly they have been for me.
Second, there is asking for help with an expectation that it's going to =
be
forthcoming, and then there's demanding it because "I'm blind". I don't
know the individual involved and can't therefore judge how this request
might have been delivered.

In the case of your UPS experience, remember, drivers and UPS are =
governed
by a collective bargaining agreement that spells out very precisely what
drivers can and can't do. If, as is likely, filling out forms for blind
people isn't a covered task, then, the folks at the call center are =
probably
going to tell you just what they did.

I think a better strategy is to not give people a heads-up that you =
might
need some extra assistance, and just ask the drivers if they can do the
paperwork when they make a pick up. This is for two reasons. First,
collective bargaining agreements notwithstanding, drivers are generally =
glad
to do this. And second, if a driver doesn't want to help, the monkey's =
on
his back in terms of explaining why he failed to make his pick up.

man stuff like the below story just make me so mad. I wonder what they =
would
of said about there rules if for example the clerk was having a hart =
attack.
, A customer new c. p. r. however because the rules say that no =
customers
can go behind the counter the post office worker was allowed to die =
while
awaiting e. m. s. to arrive. I bet in that case they would do the write
thing and allow anyone who could help brake the rules.
I had the same problem one day when I was mailing off a u p s package, I
made the mistake of telling the call center rep that I was Blind and =
please
let the driver know that I would need help addressing the box. The rep =
said
in so many words no way Jose. So I just called fed-x told that rep the =
story
about my lack of help through u. p. s. and the fed-x rep made shore I =
got
help from there driver. I pray that one day maybe all of us Blind =
persons
will stick together and make things change for the better. tell then we =
are
all kind of on our own

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A blind man who was trying to mail a package said =
he
was mistreated and denied help at the post office.

On Thursday, Roger Francis was trying to mail a piece of medical =
equipment
at the Independence Avenue post office when he asked a clerk for help
addressing
  the package.

Francis said he was denied help.

"She didn't tell me to go to the back of the line, they out and out
refused help," Francis told KMBC's Dion Lim. "People who are visually
impaired or handicapped
  are generally not refused help."

Francis said he ended up going home and wasting $20 on a cab ride to =
the
post office.

"This is asinine. You don't do this," said Pamela Francis, Roger's =
wife,
who is also legally blind.

Service manager Rowland Tidmore said it's against the U.S. Post =
Office's
policy to address packages for customers.

"It's supposed to be ready for mailing at the counter. It takes the
liability away from us," Tidmore said.

Tidmore said the clerk offered the man assistance after other =
customers
had been helped.

"The customer didn't want to wait and he left the building," Tidmore =
said.

He said he apologized to the couple for any misunderstanding.

Pamela Francis said this isn't true.

"All he did was justify what this woman did, and she was going by the
guidelines, which is crap," Pamela Francis said.

"I don't want special treatment. I just wanted help mailing this off,"
Roger Francis said.

Tidmore said the clerk who helped Roger Francis is one of his best
workers.=20
