When in a list of files, such as the documents folder, or the Home folder,
press the command key and the number 2 from the top row.
You can also experiment with pressing the command key and the number 3, to see
which view you like the best.

There are several views, icons, lists, detailed view, and these options are
chosen with command and the numbers 1 through 4 on the top row.
The computer will remember which view you have chosen once one is selected.
