Ansel Adams, Lucas Samaras photographs set records at Polaroid collection auction Associated Press 06/22/10 8:42 AM PDT NEW YORK — A sale of photographs by Ansel Adams and Lucas Samaras has set records at a New York City auction for the artists. The records came Monday on the first of a two-day Sotheby's auction from the Polaroid corporate collection. Some 800 more photographs were being offered on Tuesday. Monday's sale total was $7.1 million, exceeding the top $4.5 million estimate. Adams' "Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park" sold for $722,500. The auctioneer said that shattered his 2006 auction record of $609,600 for "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico," from 1941. A Samaras work, "Ultra-Large (Hands)," went for $194,500. The previous record for the artist was $132,000 for "Transformation: Eyeglasses" set in 1989.
