I don't see the point in that... I also did not like the big images on the
main page, but there's a totally easy solution:

Either you put that directly in pi.css, or you create a file inc/local.css
and add this line to your inc/local.php:
$pageheaders[151] = "<link rel=stylesheet type='text/css' href='inc/local.css'
