----------------------- REVIEW 2 --------------------- PAPER: 1 TITLE: Pythran : Génération automatique de modules natifs parallèles pour Python avec annotations OpenMP AUTHORS: Serge Guelton OVERALL EVALUATION: 1 (weak accept) REVIEWER'S CONFIDENCE: 2 (low) ----------- REVIEW ----------- This paper presents a compiler which ease the task of writing native modules in python. The compiler provides a subset of the python language to write such modules. Different tools that help the user with writing native modules are presented, as well as their downsides. The state of the art is well structured going from the approach of writing native modules to the problem of parallelizing scripting languages. They stated that the existing approaches are not well suited for fine-grained parallelization, and that's why it is proposed an approach based on OpenMP. This approach is implemented adding special annotation to instructions in python offering an easy syntax to add OpenMP support. The approach was compare against other hybrid system which enables to write native code. Good results are shown in terms of execution time where the approach outperforms in almost 400 times other systems. Event though the results seems interesting there are some parts that have to be fixed and explained in more detail: - In section 4.1.1 The process of adding annotations has to be better explained, describing the role of "ast" and the whole process of translation perhaps it could be explained along with the section 4.2. - There is no reference to the website of the project, and it is not mentioned the availability of such compiler over different sources as: Github and the python repository. - The results are not clear, the paper is about the possibility of adding OpenMP support but less than half of the results shown, are related with the use of Pythran+OpenMP. - It is not explained why non-negligible gains are obtained using just Pythran without OpenMP. - The contribution of the paper is not clear, it seems that some parts describe the functionalities of Pythran and How does it work and they are not needed for explaining the support for OpenMP. Suggestions: - In section 3.3, the C++ standard could be cited as ISO/IEC 14882:2011 (2011). ----- End forwarded message ----- -- serge
