Dirk, I think your idea is doable. However, I will start from scratch with my new foldable. As you say, the simplicity of the python invites to simple solutions compared to ordinary foldables. I want the new design to be simple in every aspect.
In order to compete with Brompton there is another issue beside foldability. The rear rack on Brompton is very low compared to the saddle which makes it possible to haul big loads. I have ridden the Brompton with a 65 litres rucksack placed on the rack and strapped to the saddle post, without any stability problems. Since my dream is to make a longer tour where I combine train rides with biking, I need that space. On a design like the monty there is no room for a big load. So my latest thought is to make a higher frame where the load is placed under the seat. A higher sitting position I also hope will reduce the fear factor which is big when riding in city traffic aamong motor vehicles on a very low and very tiny bicycle.
I'll be happy to share idéas and thougts with this list in order to find good solutions.

There is one fold (upwards) just in front of the front wheel. The front 
folds upwards taking care of that nasty BB part. The tubes need to be
adjusted so the wheel fits between them. You need a derailleur kind of

less engineering effort to fold then a brompton as it is basically a
stick going straight from rear wheel to BB.

Is there hope for a monty 2.0?
