Het beeld dat 'school shooters' een einzelgänger zijn, gepest worden en een
psychiatrische geschiedenis hebben klopt statistisch niet. Zij ervaren een
existentiële crisis en vindengeen oplossing in religie of filosofie met als
gevolg dat zij een eigen realiteit of persoonlijke religie creëren. Dit blijkt
uit het promotieonderzoek van Birgit Pfeifer die de autobiografische teksten,
zoals manifesten en afscheidsbrieven, van deze jongens analyseerde.
Pfeifer: “Er bestaat geen betrouwbaar profiel van ‘school shooters’. Bovendien
is het populaire beeld van een einzelgänger met psychische problemen een
beperking om potentiele daders te herkennen en hun verschrikkelijke acties te
voorkomen. De waarschuwingssignalen van een ogenschijnlijk goed functionerende
jongere, kunnen over het hoofd worden gezien door deze onjuiste percepties.
Tegelijkertijd werkt dit stigmatiserend voor jongens die aan dat beeld voldoen.”

Behandelingen via het internet kunnen een depressie voorkomen, of depressieve
klachten minderen. Van de mensen met depressieve klachten die een behandeling
thuis via het internet krijgen, zijn na een jaar ongeveer 40 procent minder
depressief. Dat blijkt uit het promotieonderzoek van Claudia Buntrock.
