Physics@Veldhoven brings 2,000 'heroes of physics' together

In January, the congress Physics@Veldhoven was a hive of activity. At the
Koningshof conference centre, more than 2,000 physicists came together to
discuss the latest state of affairs in physics. The annual conference covers
the entire spectrum of physics, from dark matter to solar fuels, and from
string theory to research into the living cell. The theme of 2017: heroes of
physics.

Arian Steenbruggen: 'New NWO: flexible, agile and focused on cooperation'

With effect from 1 January 2017, Arian Steenbruggen is the director of the new
NWO Domain Sciences. "I want to make my contribution to the success of the new
design of NWO, by enhancing the collaboration between the science areas of NWO.
As one NWO we will be more flexible, agile and focused on cooperation. This
also means that NWO will become more effective, respond more flexibly to
developments in science and society."

Strings, mirrors and tape is a new book about 70 years of Dutch physics. It is
a collection of pinnacles in scientific achievement, Nobel Prize winners, and
research that captures the imagination. The book can be purchased in bookshops.
Using a large number of photos, this book shows how physicists have
successfully adapted to the times.

QuantERA call 2017

NWO participates in the QuantERA consortium to contribute to the further
advancement of quantum science and technology in Europe. A call for proposals
is now open to finance projects in this area.

Rubicon Grants for Hensen and Island

Twenty-one researchers who have recently gained their PhDs will do research at
foreign research institutes with a Rubicon grant. Among them physicists Bas
Hensen and Joshua Island. Hensen will join the Centre for Quantum Computation
and Communication Technology at the University of New South Wales, Australia.
Island will conduct research on graphene heterostructures at the University of
California-Santa Barbara, USA.

Four scientists receive WISE position

Elisabeth Adams, Barbora Hola, Stacey Jeffery and Anja Spang have been given a
position in the first round of the NWO Women In Science Excel (WISE) programme
at the following research institutes respectively: ASTRON, NSCR, CWI and NIOZ.
WISE will provide twenty tenure track positions in the coming five years at NWO
research institutes.

ERC Grant: waves without energy loss

Some materials can transmit signals without conducting electricity or losing
energy. Theoretical physicist Rembert Duine studies this principle, and has
recently received a ERC Consolidator Grant to facilitate his work. He will use
the grant to better understand conduction by means of so-called ‘spin waves’.

Research News

Nanoscale laser at room temperature

By controlling the interplay between light and matter at a nanoscale,
researchers from DIFFER, TU/e and Universidad Autonoma of Madrid have created a
laser which is small and sturdy enough to fit onto a computer chip. The paper
Plasmon-Exciton-Polariton Lasing was published in the recent edition of Optica.

Folding reconfigurable materials in Nature

During his PhD research at Harvard University, AMOLF group leader Bas Overvelde
developed a smart method for designing and investigating new metamaterials. For
such materials the microstructure determines the function, rather than the
molecular composition. Overvelde and his American colleagues developed a
toolkit to design such metamaterials that can assume different shapes in a
manner reminiscent of origami.

Utrecht Physics Challenge

On the 6th of May, physicists and non-physicists are invited to visit the
Utrecht Physics Challenge, a brand new physics event in Utrecht. Besides
numerous day long experiments and demonstrations, this day will feature a
number of live physics shows. Physics students can join the Student Challenge:
a quiz based on eight lectures of physicists in the fields of
superconductivity, climate, chaos, space exploration and dark matter.
