DIT IS EEN DOORGESTUURD BERICHT VAN HET IAU EUROPEAN REGIONAL OFFICE IN LEIDEN

The International Astronomical Union’s European Regional Office of Astronomy
for Development is organising a symposium on 14 February at the old Leiden
Observatory to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic picture showing the
Earth as a "pale blue dot" and to discuss its past and future impact on
humankind.
On 14 February 1990, a photo of our planet was taken by the Voyager 1
spacecraft from the outer region of our Solar System. This and subsequent
"Pale Blue Dot" images convey an important message about our planet that is
both relevant to the present state of our species and an inspiration for future
generations. As you may know, perspective and awe about our place in the
Universe is an inspirational tool that we have been using to reach out to young
children globally with the Universe Awareness and Pale Blue Dot projects to
stimulate tolerance and internationalism and further the UN Sustainable
Development Goals, particularly those involving peace, education and climate.
The symposium will start at 10.30 am (programme attached) and will include
talks about the search for life on extra-solar planets and how the "pale blue
dot" perspective can be used to stimulate a sense of global citizenship. After
the symposium, a new art-science photo exhibition "Living in the shadow of
Green Bank radio telescopes and the Drake Equation" will be opened and this
will be followed by a reception.
