Doesn't sound like the selenium staining warned about. The KHCA will prevent that with nothing else. Are you sure the stain is coming from the toner?

Can you describe the stain in more detail. The selenium staining I've
seen was due to decomposition by acid after incomplete washing and was
peach colored.  This is the effect that requires treating prints fixed
in an acid fixer with some sort of alkali bath before toning.
I never got this, but my printing ritual includes a water rinse after
the second fixer (F-6), followed by a KHCA bath, then a long wash, and a
2% Kodalk bath before toning. The Kodalk bath is probably unnecessary.
