OK so I thought about it some more but it still seems very strange...

----------------------------------
"A Cumberland County community is joining the festivities this year.=
Mechanicsburg, Pa., will drop a wrench to usher in the new year."

so they want to join in with everyone else and have invented their own=
peculiar tradition. And I thought traditions became traditions by virtue=
of having been in existence for some considerable time.
----------------------------------

"Harrisburg, Pa., will return to its custom of dropping a giant strawberry=
this year. Last year, the city dropped a cow painted to look like a=
strawberry as part of a preview for Cow Parade Harrisburg."

I don't want to go there. Talking about painted cows has proven to be a=
touchy subject with some list members in the past.
----------------------------------

"Lancaster and York, Pa., are known as Red Rose City and White Rose City,=
respectively. In Lancaster, the city raises a red rose. York residents=
watch the drop of a white rose into a giant vase to announce the new year."

Now this one seems to have some links to the mother land and historical=
significance. I know you're all into history so look up the "war of the=
roses" in British History and you will find that the Lancastrians and Yorks=
started that war a long long time ago and they still hate each other today.=
What its got to do with new year I have no idea.
----------------------------------

"In Elizabethtown, Pa., a huge M&M will be lowered in Center Square at 7=
p.m. The town chose 7 p.m. to mark the new year in its sister city,=
Letterkenney, Ireland. Elizabethtown is home to an M&M Mars plant."

Hangers on I would say....
----------------------------------

"A summer tradition is revised in a different way in Falmouth, Pa., where=
the community lowers a stuffed goat. The town is known for its day of goat=
 races in the summer."

Falmouth UK is in the county of Cornwall which is known as Kernow to the=
locals. Kernow is one of the seven Celtic nations. Living in the=
neighbouring county to Kernow, I personally can vouch for the fact that=
they have some very strange rituals down there and stuffing goats wouldn't=
 surprise me in the least.
----------------------------------

"Manheim, Pa., will raise an orb."

Lacking Imagination?
----------------------------------

In York County, Dillsburg will lower a pickle.=20

no idea?
----------------------------------

Red Lion, Pa., which was once the cigar-manufacturing capital of the United=
 States, will raise a cigar.

Also lacking Imagination?
----------------------------------

Middletown, Pa., will drop a ball

not worth mentioning
----------------------------------

Hummelstown, Pa., will drop a lollipop.

Duh!
----------------------------------

"Lebanon, Pa., will drop 7=BD-foot-long bologna (pictured, left) at=
midnight. The piece of meat weighs about 120 pounds and is the largest they=
have made for the drop so far. Also in Lebanon County, Cleona will continue=
the tradition it started last year and drop a pretzel from a tower at the=
 Cleona fire station."

I suppose somebody had to do it! oops there's another one of those invented=
traditions which come into being before they've happened.

----------------------------------

"Shippensburg, Pa., will drop an anchor to welcome the new year"

lacking originality but I guess they would tell me to sling my hook if I=
 said so.
----------------------------------

Newville, Pa., will drop a big spring.

Oh boing!

----------------------------------
New Bloomfield, Pa., will drop a huckleberry

whats a huckleberry?
----------------------------------
Duncannon, Pa., will drop a sled

Why?
----------------------------------

Blain, Pa., will drop a cow made of wood from a silo.=20

Bovine references seem very popular for some reason
----------------------------------

In Liverpool, Pa., the community will drop a canal boat.=20

They should invite Boris Johnson as a spectator...
