Dear Nephew Michael,

Thank you for the pointer to the eBay item. It did not seem to be working, but I will try again later.

The subject of dental camera work is ....errr....Oh hang it all, I might as well tell the truth. It is a dreadful business.

For decades we have been pressed by the camera shops to purchase Yashica, Pentax, and other devices categorised as "Dental" by virtue of a ringlite and a couple of slip-on supplementary lenses for the front. Or Kodak and Polaroid whatevers with wire frame or string distance measurement. The prices were astronomical, reflecting the manufacturer's prejudices re. professional pricing. How many of them were ever used for dental photography is a moot point - the salemen pressing me always emphasized the fact that they were also useful for travel photos as well. I would have succumbed to the hype had they tried to sell me an Intra-oral Linhof Technika ( Open Wiiiiiiide...)

Is there anything worse than intra-oral photography? Well, I suppose proctologists on the list might pipe up at this point, but I candidly admit that I get more from a good B/W line drawing of whatever professional point is being made than most of the 35mm colour photos. Particularly now that the digital era has led to a whole new festival of pixellation and blown highlights. The large format work is good, but I don't want to roll the Mighty Shen Hao into the treatment room.

Hopefully I will not have to interest myself myself in this aspect of the art for another decade. I hope to be allowed to retire to the workhouse in 7 years and can moulder quietly. Indeed there are some days at work that make the churchyard look good.....

Uncle Dick
