I'll second Thunderbird.. I've switched to Gmail however. It's one of the best Web Apps out there today.

   Same functionality for SPAM as T-Bird.

Paranoid mode on ...
All Emails stored on Goggle servers, in the US ... Given the way the US Government goes, I wonder if it is a soo good idea.
Last but not least, a friend of mine gone totally digital has lost all his pictures because the company storing them get bankrupt...
In Rome, the execution place was just outside the Capitolium.....
