I very vaguely recall an article by Ctein on a topic like this. You might
Google using his name as one of the keys.

Foxing, which is a kind of mildew, is common in old books and manuscripts. You can probably find additional information from sources like CooL, Conservation On Line. My memory is that its quite difficult to deal with.
