Or its also possible Ansel gave them to some close friends to experiment with, print there way to see what happened, or maybe a host of other reasons.  It is possible he did have an envelope of negs that got misplaced in a group like that, and it took this long for them to turn up again.  Who knows?  Whether they are real Adams negs or not, likely will never be known.  Either way, the buyer will make out just fine even selling them as "likely but not confirmed Ansel Adams" or any of a host of other ways to market the prints while being totally up front about the uncertainty of whether or not Ansel actually made them.  Id buy a "maybe" Ansel Adams book, if for no other reason than to look at the prints to see if I thought they were really his or not.

I'm not saying if these negs are Ansels or not. But remember he was part of a group of fellow large format shooters called the F64 group. they went on outings, they shared things like darkroom space. ....See where this is going? Perhaps Ansels wife helped the group by cataloging the negs? In the early 80s 4 friends and I used to go to Chicago and shoot the skyscrapers. To this day the prints are very similar but just different enough....

Yeah I read about that. I wonder if they are his, and how
they ended up at a garage sale in Fresno. I can definitely
see their historical significance. The Ansel Adams
Publishing Rights Trust is denying authenticity for now,
but you never know.
