Hi Frank

Very interesting.

I ran my specific make of condenser with and without a separate phantom
power supply and the performance was the same as far as I could here. Very
interesting indeed. I'll do some more test about this.

But the same will then probably hold for recorders like the Edirol?

Plug in power yes, phantom power no.
The plug in power available on the ptr2 and ptp (not on ptr1) supplies
low voltage necessary to power the fet preamp in electret condenser
microphones. The phantom power required by a true studio condenser is
not available on any plextalk model. Stille a few true condenser
models such as the AKG c1000 (not stereo) will accept a battery for phantom
power but even then if you look at the specs there is one set
for full 48 volt power and another compromised set for the 9 volt
battery power.
Same is true for my AT models that will accept battery or external phantom
power -- you do not get full performance when operating on battery phantom.

The principle work around is to use a small mixer with a phantom power
supply.

Ed Lopez back here. for mikes on the PTR1 pocket, I used the audio
Technica 822 Mic as well as the mic from core sound. By the way,
there is a difference between Fantum power and plug in power. plugin
power, is only 6 to 9 votes power. Fantum power is generaly about 24
to 48 votes power and is used on mics that have balanced inputs and
use a 3 pin conecter. The audio technica 822 uses a battery for it's
power, but it works very well. Also if you are outside, I use the
mics from core sound that uses plugin power, so there is no need for a
external battery. You can put the mics on your shurt leaving your
hands free. Hope that helps.
