Hi Sharon,

Um .... Kind of ...

44.1 kHz is the sampling rate. It means that when the sound is converted into digital form, they sample it 44.1 thousand times per second. This is the rate that's used for CD, so the quality is pretty good, though higher rates can be used.

If you choose 22 kHZ instead on the Pocket, then the highest frequency that will be kept from the original audio, even in a .WAV file, is 11.5 khz, so the quality is noticeably lower than 44.1.

The numbers for MP3 compression refer to the quantity of information being processed, so the higher the better. 256 KBPS is pretty high quality but as someone pointed out the very highest in common use is 320. 256 should be good enough for most applications though.

Hope that helps.

Best,

Peter

So, let me see if I get this. the 44.1 number is the quality, and the number
like 256 or 128 is a compression number? Sharon

Thanks Peter; excellent explanation.

Hi Amie,

PCM stands for Pulse Code Modulation. It refers to the way that
sound is converted from analogue to digital form, and as Jamie said,
when the Plextalk range uses PCM it results in a standard Windows WAV
file. This doesn't use data compression as MP3 does, so gives better
quality at the expense of much larger file sizes.

Best,

Peter
