Good point; yes I would think so these days!

Andy,

Hmmmmm....I wonder if there is also an element of the legislation that
involves the later disposal of units like the PTR1 in terms of land fill
sites etc?

Well Jamie, It's an interesting point, as it almost seems like the EU is

trying to have some influence over risk to health of [in this case]
workers
in Japan, yet we can freely buy goods, or even food in our supermarkets
that
we know has been produced by workers in third world countrys, under poor

health conditions, and for very little remuneration. It would be
interesting
to know why one is ok and the other isn't!

Andy,

You might be right here but we're rapidly getting to an area outwith my
knowledge. I think that the EU ruling applies to any products for sale
in the EU regardless of where they were manufactured.

However, I'm sure that, if there was any health risk from owning a PTR1,
RNIB would not have been allowed to continue to sell them and would have
been forced to withdraw existing units as you suggest. As this isn't
happening, I can only presume that the units are perfectly safe for
normal use.

If you want a more specific response to this question, I could ask some
of the people in RNIB's product team if that would help?

Cheers,

Jamie

Thanks Jamie - regarding any health risks, I thought this was an EU
ruling,
and as the product is made in Japan, wouldn't apply to their workforce -
not
that I wish them any health risks, of course!

Andy,

I forgot to say that I understand that there is no health risk from
the
lead components in the PTR1 and that it is more about the potential
risks during the manufacturing process.

Hi all -

This is a UK question.

Firstly, I'm wondering about the actual implication to health from
the
use
of led in the PTR1, and if it is illegal to sell such products in the
EU,
then does the RNIB have a requirement in law to withdraw the PTR1 and
offer
a refund, or a replacement in say, the PTR2? Any one know the position
in
this one?

Andy
