I have done a number of comparative tests with a windows 2000 laptop (compaq
M700),
to find out what is the best method to run a server on windoze hardware.
This laptop has 256 MB memory, and a CPU frequency of 745 MHz.

Results with andLinux running fldigi and the server on windows2000 pro:
* Pulseaudio not possible, TX intermittent. 100% CPU on transmit.
* Portaudio decodes PSK500 ok, 70-100% CPU when sending PSK500 or PSK500R.
After starting 1 windows application (CPU monitor) sending PSK500R or PSK500
with
bad quality, unable to decode on the other end. Connection degrades to
PSK250R/MFSK32.
This situation remains after killing the windows app.

Results after booting puppy linux live CD with the pskmail server on the same
machine,
and making a 512 MB pup-save image + puppy swap on C:\ :
* 100% decode and TX of PSK500 and PSK500R, no problem whatsoever.

This shows that on meager hardware it is still possible to run a server,
provided
you use the puppy version or native linux.

If you have meager hardware available which you can dedicate to the project,
there are 3 possibilities which I have thoroughly tested:

* Use Xubuntu 10.04 LTS
* Use Ubuntu server with TightVNC as a headless system (here running on a
eeePC701)
* Use the puppy liveCD (probably the easiest, which minimal config effort).

The puppy solution gives you the best speed...
