I can't give you legal advice. If you're concerned, I suggest you consult
someone who can.
In the past, Joe Dever has expressed his willingness to allow fan-created
fiction based on Magnamund as long as a notice about his copyrights and his
trademark on "Lone Wolf" were included and easily found.
I haven't heard one way or the other from any of the illustrators. I don't
know how they or their estates would look at fans using small portions of
their work.
