The Readers' Handbook gives an example of what to expect. The actual rules
vary from book to book, so you need to consult the actual book equipment
section.
To quote from the handbook:
"What follows is a fairly common scenario intended to give you a feel for what
to expect, but it may be very different from a particular book you read"
The Topical Guide essentially lists everything you could ever find, so should
be consulted at your risk - it is full of spoilers! It is there to find more
detail on specific things you encounter as you work through.
