well that's that thing where it's a fairly common British usage to treat nouns referring to a collection of things as plural (e.g. "Emerson, Lake and Palmer are a progressive rock supergroup") whereas American usage seems to treat them as singular ("The Eagles is a really dull American rock band" :)
