If you're a registered user of Recording For The Blind, they have
several editions already recorded on tape. Another book by Russ Walter
also available from Recording For The Blind shows how to do the basic
tasks for programming in several different programming languages so
someone new to that particular language will get a feel for the
structure and syntax of their new language. Possibly guettenberg press
website has an edition of "secret guide to computers" available for
download too. It won't be the current edition but will be pretty close
to the current edition. If you buy the book though then either borrow
it from Recording For The Blind or download it and run into a problem
attempting to do something described in the book, Russ Walter's phone
number is on page 1 of the book and you're to phone him for support.
How many other authors of computer books do you know that do that?

May I suggest "the Secret Guide to Computers" by Russ Walter? Most
current edition will be helpful. Book starts out only assuming you know
how to put a plug into an electrical socket. If you get through the
first half of the book, you can consider yourself a competent computer
user. If you get through the second half of the book, you can consider
yourself on the way to becoming a competent programmer.
