backlight control in c++?

Hello all,
I'm trying to turn my backlight off, or control it.
I ran the DeviceIoControl function, but seem to be getting errors. It's not
filling the supplied buffer defined as BYTE vid[256]; with data.
I was wondering if anyone would happen to have some sample code, or snippets.
I'm basically trying to lower the backlight in order to preserve battery life
on the laptop.
